Liftoff Program
The Liftoff Program supports recent Ph.D.s for one month in the summer following their degree at a generous salary plus some funds for travel to research conferences or to work with collaborators. Liftoff fellows must be nominated by their departments.
Criteria for selection are:
- The quality and significance of mathematical research already achieved by the candidate.
- The potential of the candidate to become a leader in mathematical research.
Nomination materials should consist of the following items:
- A cover letter signed by the department chair.
- Two letters of recommendation, including one from the thesis supervisor. Existing letters of recommendation already written for job applications can be used.
- CV from the nominee including name, address, telephone, e-mail, date of birth, citizenship, education, thesis title, honors, previous employment, reference to published work or submitted articles, and proposed research description.
- A one-sentence signed statement from a mathematician agreeing to supervise the nominee on behalf of CMI, with the proposed dates of employment.
- If the nominee is neither a US citizen nor a holder of a green card, then the departmental administrator of the nominating institution should submit a letter certifying that the visa status of the nominee is compatible with summer employment by CMI. Please note that student visas are valid only until graduation and do not allow employment other than by the university. Liftoff is direct employment by CMI. Liftoff is not a fellowship, so approval from the U.S. Bureau of Citizenship and Immigration Services may be required for employment after graduation. The nominator should be aware that CMI cannot be responsible for obtaining a valid visa for a Liftoff employee.
Deadline
Nominations may be sent by electronic mail to the attention of Chelsea Chapko at liftoff@claymath.org or by mail to Clay Mathematics Institute, One Bow Street, Cambridge, MA 02138.
Nominations should be received by February 15, 2008.
Please note: The CMI Liftoff fellowship is considered full-time employment and is not compatible with simultaneous employment elsewhere.
