The British Mathematical Colloquium has been the major general meeting for the pure mathematics community in the UK since 1949. The 2018 meeting, at the University of St. Andrews, will consist of a mixture of plenary lectures, morning parallel lectures, a public lecture, and a collection of affiliated workshops.

In the last decade many natural and named problems in Finsler geometry were solved by mathematicians who do not consider Finsler geometry their main subject. Typically, these people work in Riemannian geometry, in the theory of dynamical systems including integrable systems and symplectic geometry, in the theory of PDE, or in metric (Alexandrov) geometry. The aim of this conference is to bring together these people, as well as experts in the Finsler geometry, to exchange ideas and combine methods in studying other problems in Finsler geometry.

A conference has been organized in celebration of Professor Sir John Ball’s 70th birthday and in honour of his impressive mathematical contributions. The conference will provide a unique opportunity for researchers and current PhD students to learn about recent exciting developments in some of the areas most associated with John Ball’s name and most influenced by his work, both in the UK and internationally.
The Conference will focus on three aspects of John Ball’s research interests:

This conference will review key mainstream directions in the recent development of geometry which sprang from Riemannian Geometry in an attempt to use its methods in various contexts of non-smooth geometry. This concerns recent developments in sub-Riemannian geometry, metric generalizations of the theory of non-positively curved spaces and discretizations of methods in geometry, geometric measure theory and global analysis. All these themes are intertwined and have developed either together or greatly influencing one another. The conference will focus on the synergy of these very modern areas, and chart the latest developments and the remaining open problems.

This biennial meeting covers research in all areas of combinatorics and its applications. The conference series has been running since 1969 and is the focal event in the UK Combinatorics calendar.

This two week program on arithmetic geometry will focus on a number of areas of important progress over the past three or four years: p-adic Hodge theory, p-adic Langland program, ramification of étale l-adic sheaves, special values of L functions and automorphic and motivic periods, and conjectures of Deligne, Beilinson, and Gan-Gross-Prasad. The first week will be devoted to a summer school and the second to a conference.

The 71st British Mathematical Colloquium will provide an invaluable opportunity for mathematicians from across the spectrum of pure mathematics to meet, hear about new developments from international experts in both proximate and more distant areas, and to discuss their work with each other. The BMC also serves an important role in giving PhD students an overview of UK-wide pure mathematical activity. The Colloquium will offer longer plenary talks and pairs of parallel talks in the mornings and specialised workshops with shorter talks in afternoons. There will also be a public lecture.
