A Panorama of Homotopy Theory

This conference will bring together three overlapping and interacting communities: equivariant and motivic homotopy theory, derived algebraic geometry, applications of homotopy theory in physics. The organizers will strive to represent the unity of the vast and still growing subject of homotopy theory. Sub-communities that have developed over time will thus again sit next to each other, their common history giving them a common language and tool set. This will enable mutual stimulation, exchange and cross-fertilisation.

Advances in Nonlinear Analysis and Nonlinear Waves: a Conference in Honor of Frank Merle

Since his early articles in the 1980s, Frank Merle’s work has been mostly centered on the mathematical analysis of nonlinear partial differential equations with Hamiltonian structure, like dispersive and wave equations, appearing in problems of wave propagation. In the 1980s, basic properties of these equations were established, notably the existence and stability properties of special solutions called solitons.  In the 1990s, the introduction of tools from harmonic analysis led to a refined understanding of the properties of the linear equations and how to extend them to nonlinear equations by perturbation. In this context, breakthrough works on the local well-posedness problem for such equations by Kenig-Ponce-Vega, Bourgain, Tao and others, were extremely influential. In particular, the notion of criticality appeared (invariance by scaling). The remaining problem of understanding qualita- tively the long-time dynamics of solutions, in relation with solitons have attracted considerable interest in the last thirty years. Frank Merle has enormously contributed to such questions in di↵erent directions : blowup in finite time, multi-solitons, collision of solitons, classification of solutions, soliton resolution conjecture. Very often, his surprising and disruptive ideas have strongly influenced the field. During the conference, Pierre Rapha ̈el (Herchel Smith Professor of Pure Mathematics at the University of Cambridge), former PhD student and long-term collaborator of Frank Merle, will give a talk summarizing Merle’s main contributions and ideas.  In this conference, several of the best worldwide experts in the field of dispersive and wave equations will present various aspects of their recent advances.

New Perspectives in Pure Mathematics

In recent years, reasearch in pure mathematics has flourished.  Often the most notable advances and breakthroughs have come from researchers drawing upon results and techniques from other areas, or finding applications in other areas.  This three-day conference will focus on the interaction between algebra, combinatorics, geometry, logic, number theory, and topology.  The invited speakers are excellent researchers whose work cuts across and combines various areas within pure mathematics and theoretical computer science.

Representation Theory and Applications to Combinatorics, Geometry and Quantum Physics

This conference is dedicated to Boris Feigin on his 60th birthday. Mostowski 100

This meeting will commemoratre the mathematical heritage of the celebrated Polish mathematician Andrzej Mostowski.  the Mostowski Centenary is an occassion to brind to Warsaw a distinguished group of mathematicians, and to explore the meaning and consequences of Mostowski’s work for the current development of Foundations of Mathematics.  The meeting will focus on the impact of his ideas on mathematics today.

Gelfand Centennial Conference: a View of 21st Century Mathematics

This conference is dedicated to the celebration of the 100th anniversary of Israel Moiseevich Gelfand (1913-2009), one of the greatest mathematicians of the 20th century. Gelfand made fundamental contributions to many areas of mathematics, and created a large and prominent school. He always emphasized unity of mathematics, and stressed that a mathematician should study new mathematics all of their life.

4th European Set Theory Conference (4ESTC)

The 4th European Set Theory Conference (4ESTC) is the largest conference in the world on set theory and related areas.  It takes place every two years; the first two editions took place in Bedlewo, Poland, in 2007 and 2009, and the third in Edinburgh, Scotland in 2011.  As in previous years, 4ESTC will bring together world leaders in set theory and its applications.

Women in Mathematics Days

The Women in Mathematics Day is an annual event organised by the London Mathematical Society.  Sessions will include talks by women mathematicians at different career stages and a poster session. There will also be a number of practical sessions to help women get the most out of their careers in mathematics. Sessions will include advice on how to get funding for your first postdoc and beyond and discussion groups on topics such as combining family and career, working overseas and making the next step in your career. The event provides an opportunity to meet and talk with women who are active and successful in mathematics.

IMA Conference on Mathematics of Finance

One persistent theme in the history of mathematics is the close relationship between the subject and finance. From the Babylonians, through Fibonacci and then Stevin, Pascal, Fermat, Huygens, Bernoulli and Bachelier the development of mathematics has often been based on solving problems in finance.  The series of financial crises following 2007 have highlighted the need for novel mathematics to address the increasingly complex problems of finance. The aim of this conference is to encourage mathematicians, from a wide range of backgrounds, to address important societal issues in relation to the operation of modern markets.

Analysis, Spectra, and Number Theory

The conference will focus on analytic number theory, with emphasis on its many relationships with analysis and spectral theory. Topics to be highlighted include arithmetic quantum chaos, analysis of families of L-functions, arithmetic statistics, and connections with ergodic theory. It will include a problem session to suggest future directions for the field. 

The last several decades have seen a number of surprising and useful connections between analytic number theory and other topics, especially analysis and spectral theory. As a few examples:

  • The spectrum of the Laplacian operators on the modular surface has become a basic tool of analytic number theory; more recently, spectra of higher rank locally symmetric spaces are beginning to play an important role also.
  • Arithmetic quantum chaos, the study of classically chaotic Hamiltonians that commute with a large family of Hecke operators, has led to a new frontier of interaction with ergodic theory.
  • The conjectural relationship between families of L-functions and random matrix theory has led to new discoveries on both sides. These include results concerning the statistics of zeros of L-functions, the value distribution and moments of L-functions, new approaches to understanding difficult combinatorics that connect these statistics with random matrix statistics, and recent insights from function fields.
  • The sum-product phenomenon interacts (via expansion and the affine sieve) with both classical problems of analytic number theory and modern questions about expander graphs.
  • Arithmetic statistics is a new subfield of analytic number theory; it is built on ideas from the classical geometry of numbers, invariant theory, and also algebraic geometry (in the function field case).

This conference is being organized in honor of Peter Sarnak on the occasion of his 61st birthday.
